Preview: The Dark Knight Rises - Prologue

Viewed the Prologue on a raining evening which set the mood for the less than 10 minute long viewing in anticipation that an actual advance screening would be take place but found a seat in the middle row with my girlfriend. Surprisingly there was less than 100 people in attendance.... I'm not going to spoil anything really but the story takes place 8 years after Harvey Dent dies and a new menace surfaces, Bane. If you followed the DC comics of Bane you know that he's this huge masked mammal that breaks Batman's back over his knee like a twig that puts the cape crusader to his knees in the most pain a comic can portray. The prologue introduces Dr. Palov being escorted with a couple of men with black hoods on with a CIA agent among a few mercenaries into a plane. The men are questioned about Bane and unmasked to find Bane himself which was all planned out. Previews of Catwomen, the Batwing and ending with Batman facing off with Bane. The final chapter in the Batman story. The quality of the film work was amazing and the introduction left me guessing what's going to happen next. The casting is close to perfect with Thomas Hardy as Bane and Ann Hathaway as Catwomen. I still have my slight doubts about Catwomen's portrayal but it's Christopher Nolan. This is on my number one list of most anticipated films for 2012. Just have a hunch.

Friends of Sound is a hidden jem on South Congress that's a gold mind for the record collector of all types. I've spent time in and out of the store with new sounds that ring through my ears for days. Of all the record stores I've been to in the good ole USA and England, I will highly reccommend this spot. I'm sure DJ Shadow and Madlib have selected records from this location on numerous occasions among other DJ's. An extremely knowledgeable staff lead by Dave the owner of the location. Also know as DJ Cool Hands. Dave took a moment to share his thoughts on records, tunes and a little bit about the record store industry.

What are some jems that are in your records collection?

Gloria Ann Taylor, "Deep Inside of You," ep. This record epitomizes where I've ended up with my musical tastes. Most records come and go for me. Due to the business I am in I tend to keep them for a short time and then move them. But, the Gloria Ann Taylor is one that I could just never bring myself to let go of.

How long have you owned a record store and how did it come about?

I have owned Friends of Sound Records in Austin for approximately 6 years. The store came about because I had a problem. I couldn't stop amassing records and my personal collection surpassed 20,000. My wife said it was either me or them. At the time, I was also unemployed and it seemed like a far more enjoyable career than many others I could have chosen.

What goes into opening and maintaining a record store?

The collector in you has to die. You can't only stock records you like because the general record buyer doesn't necessarily want a store full of Japanese Modern Soul with a funky glockenspiel break. You have to put yourself in the position of a buyer with tastes other than your own. You need to constantly keep up to date on the trends in sales of different genres and keep a balanced stock available for consumers.

What are your thoughts on the record industry and digital distribution?

Since it's inception, the record business has been a constant evolving and shifting entity. The recent focus on digitizing music has positive and negative connotations. On the positive side, people have access to music like never before and it is easier for musicians to get their songs heard. On the negative side, I personally feel, that there is something lost when you digitize a song, Yes, people may be able to hear it, but there is more to music then just the song. There's a visual aesthetic that is important to the overall experience and that is often lost in digital translation.

Any producers that you would love to see scoring a film?

Pete Rock. He never gets enough credit and he's always been amazing.

You're a DJ as well? What tunes come in rotation and any upcoming gigs?

In Austin, I participate in a great soul night called the New Day. It is at the Highball on S. Lamar and takes place the third Saturday of every month. I also have a guest spot in February at Title Town in Pittsburgh.
I have been on a late 70's/early 80's soul kick.

Film Review:Werewolves on Wheels

A biker/horror film directed by Michel Levesque from the early 70s. A gang of bikers while on their travels of wreaking havoc stumble onto an old church and mysteriously pass out after gluttonously devouring food offering from the church clergy to find themselves being slaughtered nightly by a creature. The bikers face the werewolf and soon head back to the church with vengeance to face their match with a Satanic cult in a very psychedelic manner. The film actually used real bikers for the scenes with no film experience for many of the road scenes. The music score was good and fit the film very well. The story was interesting but more shots of the werewolves would have been good. I found the film to be alright with good intentions.

Film Review:Beyond the Black Rainbow

Written and directed by Panos Cosmatos, his first feature. This Sci-Fi thriller takes place in the 1980s in an underground laboratory named The Arboria Initiative with it's main focus experimenting with mind altering drugs to push the envelope of the human mind. Lead researcher, Barry Nyle is overseeing the treatment of Alena. The film is shot in a very stylish way that I can see paying homage to old 70s Sci-Fi films and Kubrick with it's intense edge of your seat in question of what is going on in a psychedelic way. The acting in the film was kept at a minimum with more focus on the surroundings. The music of the film is a perfect sound scape to the ambiance with a close feel to Boards of Canada meets Kraftwerk. I found this film to be very innovative in every aspect and look forward to more films from the director.

Recent problems with the Zombie genre

So I just got done watching a movie on Netflix called The Horde. I was suckered in by the high ratings the film received from the Netflix community. Sadly I sat through a film teeming with problems that have become common place within the genre.
The story involves a group of cops who enter a dilapidated high rise to get revenge on the gangsters who killed one of their own. Unceremoniously (and never explained) a "horde" of zombies show up and start wreaking havok on the two groups. They have to put their differences aside to survive, which sounds like an interesting premise, but that side story falls apart rather quickly. They all decide, without a single debate, that they should find a way out of the building.
I don't understand this logic at all. They know there are 1000's of the undead just waiting for them outside. Why not try to hole up somewhere, build a strong defense, and wait out the storm... zombies or not flesh decays so inevitably they would pose less of a threat if their joints couldn't function anymore right?
So it was difficult for me to root for their cause when the basic plan was so flawed. Add in the fact that none of the characters are likable in the least and you have a recipe for tedium. Anyways, I've been pondering what is wrong with the zombie genre after watching the film and came up with a few points.

1. I may be alone in this, but I really don't like fast zombies. It has been done decently before (Dawn of the Dead remake), but for the most part I just don't like the idea of them. A dead person should be all stiff from rigor mortis, so it would make sense if they struggled to move and lumbered around. I find it far more realistic (granted the idea of zombies in general is pretty crazy, but still). These fast zombies always seem to have the strength of 10 men too.

2. I'm a bit tired of the whole social statement message. The "we are the real monsters" thing. I would much prefer a simple "oh crap they want to eat us, let's kill them before they kill us" scenario. I know most people would freak out in a panic, but some of these movies just push this message to the extreme, The Horde being a prime example.

3. Zombie films have also become far more action oriented. Now I love my gore and admittedly a lot of the reason for watching a film like this is to see some messed up stuff. The problem with the action lately is the overfast editing. I read an article a week or so ago about this new phenomena which has been called Chaos Editing. Basically the scenes just come across as random madness, meant to overwhelm your senses and excite you. As a contrast, think of one of your favorite action films from bygone eras. Die Hard, for example, set up their confrontations in a well thought out and easy to understand way. The final scene, where McClane has a gun taped to his back is a nice one to point to. We are given the information, the crooks have the girl, he's seemingly unarmed, finds his opportunity, and takes it.
In contrast, take a look at most action films today. There's sooo much going on onscreen and so many edits, it is difficult to even get a sense for what side of the room everyone is standing on. I believe this trend will eventually end, but in the meantime we will be forced to endure more of it. I worry about future films I am looking forward to falling into this trap. Jurassic Park 4 has been announced... I remember how well thought out the original was. We knew where the raptors were, but it was still very tense and exciting. They didn't need 5000 edits in the span of a few minutes to convey the terror and adrenaline we all were supposed to feel.

4. Ammo conservation! If you are fighting a legion of the undead and you have established that shots to the head will put them down for good DON'T keep pumping shotgun blasts into their chest! Save your ammo. GEEZ!

5. I'm just getting tired of zombies in general I think. There have been just way too many. Obviously some are going to be really good, but there sure is a lot of muck to walk through to get to the good stuff. I didn't watch Zombieland for the longest time cause I was sick of em. Luckily I did cause it was a good one.

Anyone have something to add to this topic? Tired of Chaos Editing too? I swear, once you know about it you will see it everywhere (The Dark Knight, James Bond, Superhero flicks... etc).

Film Review: Season of the Witch

This is George A. Romero's third film about something different than zombies but with a common house wife whom becomes involved with witchcraft in her neighborhood. Her husband spends time away from home on buisness trips weekly and leaves his wife, Joan at home bored and lonely. She meets a new neighbor with friends for a tarot card reading. Well the neighbor is a witch and causes an avanlanche of drama in the neighborhood which leaves Joan lonely in the end. I found the movie to be interesting and enjoyed the the film stock of the 70s. That gave it that grainey type feel. I would rent it before having thoughts of purchasing it. It does have an amazing soundtrack though!

An amazing soundtrack of psychedelic surreal rock music that would put Jim Morrison in a trance. Trolling the net for a copy of it on vinyl.

Film Review:Troll Hunter

Film Review:Troll Hunter

A Norwegian horror film directed and written by André Øvredal. Takes place in the Western forest and hills of Norway. This film will make you believe that the children story of Billy Goat's Gruff was based on real events. The film is shot in a moc-documentary type style which adds to the realism of the whole Troll life. A group of students find interest in documenting random bear poaches in the forest which leads them to find Hans. Attempting to follow and interview him they discover what he really does and the cause to the random findings of bears being mutilated. Trolls.. Not the small the type that are seen in past films but ones that are the size of four story buildings. They follow him in his journeys across Norway investigating why the Trolls are going mad and why the government is covering up the whole thing. It's been going on for a long time. The scene with Hans wearing a metal suit of armor coaxing a troll from under neath a bridge with three goats is reference to Billy Goat's Gruff which adds to the dark comedy of the film. The animation of the many trolls lurking in the forest at night is believable. The film is well written and directed. The cinematography is simply amazing of the lush hills and waterfalls of Norway to the snowy ending with a hum of ambiance. This is film will leave you at the edge of your seat in amazement and can't wait to own it on video. Looking forward to more film in this genre from the Netherlands. They seriously know what they are doing. Sad to say that someone already bought the rights in America for a remake. Can't you come up with your own ideas Hollywood???

Took a minute to have a chat with former Manager of I Love Video about the video rental industry. One of my favorite places to rent films and television stuff from. One of my favorite pass times is renting films and just being a film nerd. Been renting movies since 92 and maybe earlier. It deeply saddens me to see the Video Empire slowly crumple into a Cat5 cable to your computer or a Video box rental from the grocery store. Here's his thoughts on things.

How long did you work in the video rental industry and where did you work?

My first Video Rental job was at Tower Video in Richmond VA in 1997. After I moved to Texas I got hired at I Luv Video. I worked in the industry from then until the end of 2010.

How did you get your start and what was it like to work at the beginning?

When I first started, DVDs had just come out. At the time, they were the most expensive, top-of-the-line media you could get. It was sorta like when CDs replaced tapes... At first you would only get really awesome movies on DVD, and regular stuff on VHS because it was cost-effective. Over time as VHS phased out, DVDs took over. The industry tried to do it again with the HD/Blu-Ray battle of the early 00's, and while Blu-Ray "won", it never really caught on.

What were some signs you noticed in the decline in sales in the video industry?

There were two huge glaring signs that the end was near... First, all of my friends that had previously always bugged me for free movie rentals stopped coming in to the store altogether once Netflix streaming started. Second, I knew it was over when a customer requested a certain rare title and I found it was ONLY available on Netflix streaming. I realized this was quickly going to become the rule, rather than the exception.

What are your thoughts on Net Flicks and the sudden rise of Video rental box units around town?

The Redboxes are stupid. They're intended for John Q. Popcorn to watch summer blockbusters on the DVD players in their SUVs. Nobody that actually enjoys movies uses Redbox. Netflix streaming is the future. All the movies you can watch, unlimited for ten bucks. No late fees, you don't even have to put on pants. Some people may argue that Netflix doesn't have everything, and those people are correct. Unfortunately, nobody has everything. Even Scarecrow Video in Seattle (the world's largest video store) doesn't have everything. I can assure you though, as a movie buff who's seen thousands and thousands of films, there is never a time where I can't find something I want to watch on Netflix.

How are things changing that you noticed in the past time that you were working to now?

Something I noticed working in video rental was that ten years ago, a lot of people preferred to purchase and own movies rather than rent. I think the biggest reason for this was that a lot of people didn't feel comfortable leaving their credit card info in the hands of underpaid, unappreciated teenage video clerks. Also, many video stores deliberately make their late fee policies as confusing as possible, to trick customers into paying more than they need to. Nowadays, with almost everything readily available on the internet, there's no need to even go into a video store anymore, and I don't ever see things going back to the way they used to be.

What are some other side projects that you enjoy?

I play in bands, hang out and get drunk, etc.

Film Review:The Man From Nowhere

A very recent Korean Action/Thriller of vengeance and suspense directed by Lee Jeong-beom and starring Won Bin. The film starts out with Cha Tae-sik, a reclusive pawnshop owner that befriends a young girl, So-mee. Her mother is a junkie that steals from a drug trafficking gang and that leads to the mother and daughter being kidnapped until they find the heroin. This leads a gang of thugs into Cha tae-sik's pawnshop and they get a little surprise about his fighting ability. A former special forces agent that went into hiding and now holding a one man war against a ring of gangsters. The fighting sequences in the film are amazing and simply made me jump out of my seat. Accompanied by a very stylish cinematography made this simply one film to watch. Looking forward to more films from this director.

Remakes Remakes oh me oh my!

So here we go again everyone. More remakes are on the way of our favorite films from our youths. More often than not these are a big letdown, but occasionally gold has been struck so there is some hope left. Let's do a quick list of some successful remakes just to keep out spirits bright:

Feels good doesn't it? Which brings me to the news that kind of shocked me yesterday when I heard that Fright Night is getting a reboot. Fright Night!? How odd, don't you think? I loved the original, but damn, it seems like a strange choice. The trailer has been released and, to its credit, looks like an entirely different film rather than a rehash. This one could be good, but I doubt it will have the charm or the humor of the original. Who knows... I have my fingers crossed. I at least feel better about it than what I've seen of the new Conan. No one tops Arnold as Conan.
Another point that bothers me about these remakes is how they simply take the exact same name as the original.... now when we talk about these films we have to say things like "Man, have you ever seen Fright Night 1985?". Ridiculous and confusing. Anyways, here is the trailer to Fright Night. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Takashi Miike Hara Kiri remake!

I am usually not one to endorse a remake, but when I heard Takashi Miike was going to make a new version of Hara Kiri I admit I got excited. I loved the original film, it is one of my favorite classic samurai flicks and feels ripe for a re-telling. Miike recently created the super successful and all around amazing film 13 Assassins. I can't wait to see what he has done with Hara Kiri! Below is the first released still for his film and beneath that a scene from the original. After having recently watched the original film again, I can tell you this new still is right on point with what I was hoping for.

FUTURE PLANS: I am very interested in pursuing a full length animated version of Path of Blood with fully fleshed out characters, far more detailed animation and design, and a fantastic world built around the narrative. I have an excellent story currently being fleshed out. It is only a matter of procuring the funds necessary to begin such a large endeavor. Who wants to fund a film!? :D

Film Review:Sucker Punch

Film Review:Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch is watching a cut scene from a video game come to life. The film is directed by Zach Synder, starring Emily Brown and featuring Scott Glenn among other actors I'm not familiar with. John Hamm from Madmen makes a cameo. The story takes places in the mid 1960s with a young girl, nicknamed Baby Doll, being committed to an insane asylum with a very vivid imagination to find her self trapped for the next five days until she undergoes a lobotomy. This is requested by her Stepfather to cover up her sisters real death and to keep the inherent her mother's fortune away from Baby Doll. She takes note of certain items to possibly plot her escape and befriends fellow patients in her plan. I found the film to be visually entertaining but layered with much CGI graphics through out the film and with a soundtrack comparable to a Resident Evil sequel type film. The action sequences in the film were extremely entertaining and was fond of the ancient Japan and nazi zombie battles scenes to achieve her goal of escape. The acting was believable and gave you sense of hope for their conquest. Scott Glenn was a missing character from the Dirty Dozen, one cool dude. Overall I found the movie visually enjoyable yet still lacking something. Girls, guns, violence and action isn't always the resolution. Enjoyable. I think I should of watched it on the IMAX instead.

A very talented band composed of 2 electricians, a carpenter and a bartender from different bands to form like voltron to create this super sonic sound called Hot Rails to Hell. I met the band at different moments through Kevin (Guitars) of the band. He also turned me onto metal from the Netherlands and other interesting tunes. Had a quick second to chat with Kevin about the band and what not. Rock on

You have an interesting line up, how did you guys form?

Jasmine, Jay, and I all met in 07' and played in a hardcore punk band, Ben Pickett was always around, went on a texas tour with us. Jay and I played in several punk bands before we decided to start a rock n roll project. fall of 09' we asked Ben and Jasmine if they were interested and they were, so we got together and jammed on a few songs, sounded good. Played are first show at the broken neck that next march, and kept going.

What other side projects does the band have?

I play guitar in Night Siege, Jay plays drums in the Blood Royale, Jasmine plays bass in The Altars, and Ben Pickett plays Banjo with Dirty Charlie.

How would you describe your sound?

Toni Iommi had a love child with Angus young

Some of the band influences?

hmmm.....lets go with Black Sabbath, Kiss, motorhead, and early metallica

Any bands that you are currently listening too?

Been listening to lots Darkthrone, the "Kill em all" record, Sabbath, Kiss, band from sweden call Graveyard

Film Review: The American

Directed by Anton Corbijn. It's an adaption from the novel A very Private Gentleman by Martin Booth. George Clooney portrays Jack, an assassin and custom arms maker that's on holiday in the forests of Sweden with his love to find out an ambush. During the ambush he kills his lover and a couple of other assassins then flees to Italy to contact his handler to obtain a job to build a sniper riffle with a silencer. While in Italy he befriends a local priest and falls into a steamy romance with a lovely prostitute (Clara). After building the weapon he decides to ask Clara to run away with him and discovers who the weapon was built to assassinate. The film is sleek and very stylish with a film noir type setting that will leave the audience guessing what is going to happen next. Not your typical blast them to the sky type film but a deeper sense of how alone the main character with beautiful camera work and settings. The cinematography and camera work brings out the old Ian Flemming. The story of the film was well paced and the characters are interesting. This is a film that you can judge by it's cover. Simply cool and mysterious.

Film Review:Devil

Directed by Drew Dowdle and story by M. Night Shyamalan. Five people end up stuck in an elevator with the Devil to find that they can't escape their fates. I guess you can call this a supernatural thriller but there was nothing thrilling or supernatural about it really. The cast for the boxcar film was ideal for a Hitchcock type horror. The director of photography did a superb job though. It was a little predictable to find whom the devil was at the end. Over all I found the movie to be alright with some points of interest such as 5 people which stand for the points of a drawn out pentagram star. Not the best nor the worst from M. Night Shyamalan associated films.

Saw Butcher Bear with Charlie at Beauty Bar from a recommendation from a friend of a friend. I was curious and thought it was a slash metal group at first from the name then saw a blue bear wearing a snare drum come out from the depths with Charlie singing tunes that were not metal. Enjoyed the show and later ran into him and her at Red Scoot Inn, I think we all had a few adult beverages that evening cause my memory is still kinda foggy about that evening. I was able to have a small interview with the busy bear over the weekend and this what he had to say...

How are you doing today?

Doing good Doing good. Just trying to stay busy .

How would you describe your sound?

pretty junk shop. i use all kinds of different sounds to make songs. Pop music from the gutter. Live instruments, computer box, samplers, drum machines, kids' toys.

How and when did you get into djing and producing tunes?

I've been playing records for ten years. my buddy Craig who performs under the name $hit & $hine, sold me my first turntables when he left for England. I've been writing songs for more like 18 years. in all kinds of different ways. moving to producing and arranging with computer set ups and little drum machines happened maybe 7 years ago. pretty much the same as what I've always done with a few minor adjustments in the process.

Who are some of your influences?

My friends are my biggest influence for sure (soundfounder, Boom Baptist, HOBO D, Reaganometry, Atarimatt, Horse Rappaport, SSS, Answering Machine Records). i always like to see what they are up to. i get a lot of inspiration out of seeing what they come up with. we're all pretty different, but use alot of the same gear, so that helps with ideas. John Coltrane, Tim Kerr, Marc Bianchi (Her Space Holiday).

What are some current sounds that really tickle your ear the most?

I've been listening to tons of Ras G. He really has the craziest music out right now. almost unclassifiable. he makes tracks that seems totally complex, but off the cuff at the same time. it sounds like there's a war going on in the speakers. and the BASS. no one flexes it like him. Also, new Her Space Holiday record. it's not out yet, but i can tell you, the songs on there are so good. real special record for sure.

What are some of your memorable past gigs you had?

Biggest thing that happened last year was creating Exploded Drawing with my homie from Focus Group, soundfounder a.k.a. Andre Brown. A semi-Monthly event we created, where we play records for an hour and then we have 6 twenty minute sets of original live music from Texas and abroad, played by the people that make it on their equipment, ranging from drum machines and pedals to computer-controller set up, to just a loop pedal and a tambourine. We just rented a spot, a sick P.A., and let the homies show us what they've been up to in the Lab. Just so cool to see the community coming together and seeing people perform music they maybe thought they never would.
Also, getting to open up for Nosaj Thing last year was definitely a high point. Huge sound system, got to play some of my fave joints and also a bunch of my own production.

The label (IN)SECT Records, how did that come about and who is on the roster?

It's something I'd wanted to do for a very long time. Just needed the right situation and music to make it a reality.

DAK - flexi-disc out in April 2011 - DAK has put out a cassette on a label called Leaving Records. He's a beat maker from L.A. really original music. Never heard anything like it before. and we're putting it on wax. flexible wax.

Ran into Miguel long ago and ran into many different events, noticing that we have many similar tastes in music and film over the years. He's always busy doing something for sure but always make time to catch the crazy aspects of the Austin night life. Eventually he started documented it to these rather cool videos and photos that are stunning. Here's a little interview I had with him the other night about some of things he does and places to possibly catch him at.

So what did you do this past weekend?

Friday: DJ set at the First Friday Frolic at Club De Ville. Then took photos over at the 4th Fashion Freakout at Mohawk. Then Stopped by a bit for my friend's Toddy B's Birthday at Enzo.

What are some of things that you do?

I take photos, I DJ, I make videos, I promote, I host, and I have it all documented to prove it.

Your photos really capture the moment for the nighttime. How were you influenced to go out and start taking pictures?

I have always been the guy with the camera. I have pictures from my whole life. So it is natural for me to carry a camera with me everywhere. I started by simply photos of only my friends and I, but it quickly started to spread as others just jumped into the photo. People began asking where they could view the photos, so I started to post them online. Then it became what I was known for.

What are some of your craziest moments you’ve had in your nighttime ventures?

Fights and Women. I have captured some pretty crazy fights that can be viewed here http://austinfights.blogspot.com/ and as for the women, well......I'm just too much of a gentlemen to go into details.

When out and about DJing, what are some of your favorite spots to play and what places do you currently play at?

I like the more underground, indie bars to DJ at. I play a fun 80's, 90's, New Wave, Hip Hop set filled with Doo Wop oldies and show tunes. Favorite place right now would have to be Dirty Bills, it's just a friendly small bar with everybody singing along to my every selection. Favorite of all time was Music Gym. "A real shit-hole" some would say, but to me it was like that ugly child only you found beautiful. Filled with beer cans flying, excessive drug use, unnecessary fights, half naked tattooed women......you get point. Everything was "A Go". As of now I have two monthly events: 2nd wednesdays at Dirty Bills called DIRTY and Last wednesdays of every month at Lanai, titled A Night For Lovers.

Any future plans coming up?

Just getting ready for SXSW and another special project Im helping with. Cant really give away to many details other than the name, "Kingdom"

First heard about Eagle Claw via Bart, the drummer of the group a few years ago and he told me about it. I thought it was really interesting and was all about watching a band just get up there and shred kinda like listening to the instrumental B-side of a record. Saw them play for the first time at this spot called Hole in the Wall and had a blast watching everyone going Donkey Kong. Overall I thought it was really innovative and all about attending their future shows. The music is well produced and just awesome. Here's a little interview I did with the group recently.

What is the Story behind Eagle Claw on how you formed in the Fall of 2007?

It was never really supposed to be anything. Bart (Drums) had been jamming with Luther (Bass) off and on just for fun, but it was really infrequent. I don't recall exactly how it happened, but they found out somehow that I could play guitar and asked if I wanted to jam.I said yes, but the only amp I had at the time was a little 8: VOX. Hardly enough to contend with a drum kit and a bass rig. Like I said, it was all just for fun. Eventually though, songs began to form and we all really liked where it was heading. As an instrumental band, we could also see that there was a ton of room sonically to add another guitarist. The process of trying out guitarists took a lot longer than you might think. There's a lot of talented musicians in Austin, but for all of their particular reasons, we knew we had the right guy when Mike joined the band! We never looked back since.

For a metal band you have a very unique sound and wondering why you made the choice of going instrumental versus having vocals?

It really wasn't a conscious decision. We never had playing shows in mind but out sound just kinda grew organically into what it is now. We like what we are doing and so do the people who come out to see us. I can't say that we are against the option of lyrics but for us, now is not the time.

You have a release titled Poacher with some interesting artwork, how was it working on the release and who did the design?

We all had a lot of fun with the release of Poacher! I guess there was a lot to be learned though. We were so unorganized. Instead of trying to get everything done at or around the same time, we did each part individually, which stretched the amount of time from start to finish tremendously. Lesson learned. Bryan Richie recorded and mixed the album, Conrad Keely did the front cover artwork and puregrease.com did the rest of the album artwork.

What are some of your most enjoyable gigs?

Free week shows in ATX are always bad ass! Other than that we have had a lot of opportunities lately to play with a lot of bands that we respect and listen to! The Sword has also been taking us out quite a bit which is always fuckin rad! We had a killer time at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2010 too! We really just like to play live and we always enjoy it.

Any future plans such as a tour?

Of course! I don't know how soon anyone will be reading this but we have a show in OKC on the 11th and Dallas on the 12th, both of which we will be opening for The Sword. After that we will be playing a couple one0off dates from till SXSW ( which we are playing and can announce those shows soon) After SXSW we will be going on a 3 week tour heading Northeast to NYC and back down again. What is your favorite film monster?

Mike is the movie guy, so I had to ask him. Seriously he is that guy you know that remembers every movie and the actors name who played in it. I don't even know who this is but I looked up pictures of this monster and he looks pretty rad. Mike's favorite film monster is C.H.U.D.

Film Review:No Distance Left to Run

A music documentary by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace that captures the 2009 reunion and tour from the British Quintet. A comprehensive documentary that captures a celebration of music and friendship. The directors did they're homework on this one for sure starting the film out with the beginning to the close end of Blur to the several side projects that they have taken. It's filled with commentary from the band and live behind the scene footage unearthed to the screen. I found the film to be refreshing and very enjoyable with it's colorful images. It's a time line of one of the quintessential bands of the 90s. Starting off with Damon and Graham meeting each other in grade school then reconnecting at Goldsmith University to form Blur with Alex James and Dave Roundtree. If you were curious about the 90s British music movement then this would be a must have for the library also for any Blur fan out there. This is going in my film collection.

A 1994 short film written by Geoff Barrows of Portishead and directed by Alexander Hemming. It's pretty interesting to see the band create this little short. It's very spy and neo film noir type of style. Overall it's pretty cool that they made this when they where starting out. It stars the entire band in the video and Beth Gibbons is lovely as her voice. Check it out.

Film Review:Black Swan

Darren Aronofsky directed this horror themed thriller film of pressure and the presence of a doppelganger. The film stars Natalie Portman as the main character playing the young perfectionist to take on the task of the white swan but also find trouble undertaking the transformation of the black swan. Her friend Lily played by Mila Kunis fits the part for the black swan perfectly whom becomes competition that leads to her losing touch of reality. Her overbearing mother has a failed ballet career and puts the pressure by reliving her career through her daughter. It's terrible how this happens and adds to her caving in under pressure. The film was shot in a real type format rather than the pretty film stock. It gave it a sense of raw realness to make many of the shots believable. The camera work in the film was impressive with the many scenes having a horror type element leaving you at the edge of your seat in wonder. Natalie Portman does not get naked in the film if you were looking for a cheap thrill, just to let you know but there is a sultry scene in the film that heats up the coldest theatres. There was months of training for the film and ballet is just more than standing in the middle of a stage with a tutu looking cute. It's serious pressure. I found this film to be simply amazing and see it winning many awards for ceromonies to come. This is the same director from requiem for a Dream and Pi. Expect intense. I highly reccommend to watch this.

Film Review:Lynch (one)

A documentary on the creative film director David Lynch while finishing his film Inland Empire. The film is over two years of footage of David Lynch working and discussing his process in film with many in depth interviews that reveals a more personal side and perspective. The director of the film basically lived with him and followed him during this period. The film starts out with his obsession with taking photos and one of his many journeys in Polish abandoned factories. Lynch seems to be a rather calm and collected individual that has a racing imagination that he produces onto film. I found it rather amusing to watch him talk to a camera for online updates for his personal website that is ran by him to his fans and he has a few quirks caught on film. Overall I found this film to be entertaining and inspiring for anyone in the film community or would like to see how things get done in a more different fashion. He just seems like a cool person overall. I plan on purchasing this as an early Christmas gift for myself. I would recommend this film for the curious and the fan.

Film Review:Them

Co Directed/ Written by David Moreau and Xavier Palud, the tension in this French horror film is from start to finish that will keep you at the edge of your seat. The film is supposedly based on a true story and as the film progresses I can actually see this happening in real life from some twisted types. The begins with a young couple from France moving into a lovely home nestled in the countryside of Romania. Later during the evening they are being chased for their life by a group of small hooded people with the intent of putting them into harms way with a tense feel. The ending of the film leaves you in a confused state though. The cinematography in the film is superb but there's not much of a plot in the film except for an isolated couple running for their lives from a band of small hooded killers in a very brutal manner. I found this film to be enjoyable and tense at the same time.

Film Review:Monsters

Written, Cinematographered and directed by Gareth Edwards in this low budget Sci-Fi thriller. A space probe crashes in Mexico with an alien life form that multiplies in great numbers which causes a panic in the Southern part of North America. A photojournalist is on a last minute errand to escort his boss's daughter around the alien infested hot zone but insteads ends up going through the infestation zone to find more than just another photograph to place in a magazine or newspaper. The creatures in the film resemble large octopus from the very depths of the ocean but instead from space. The special effects were great and the visual aspect of the film was very realistic. Most of the script in the film was improvised which impressed me and gave it a real time effect in the dialog. All of the extras where actual villagers in regular settings with no notice that they were being filmed. A very guerrilla style shot film to say the least. There's a few scenes in the film that kinda reminded me of other films such as Cloverfield when the monsters connected and showed only harm when they were just protecting their offspring from air raids and such. Other scenes pay homage to Jurassic Park and Jaws but you'll have to watch the film to find out. I found the film to be artistic and innovative in the style it was filmed. The film kept me at the edge of my seat in curiosity. I found this film overall brilliant and would recommend it.

Film Review: Following

Following is the first film that Christopher Nolan directed. He spent a whole year working on this film which was filmed every Sunday during that time while holding onto his day job. The film tells the tale of a mans obsession with following people to find what they do and how they do it which leads him into a situation of course that hits him right into a pigeon type scenario. The film is shot in black and white which carries a modern day film noir type feel with a touch of suspense in an art house type sense. I found the film interesting and would watch it again during some coffee during the day but would consider this a sleeper of a film. It was well shot and the characters in the film were believable. I can see a situation like this taking place in a well populated city such as New York or Chicago. Overall I would check this out if your into Hitchcock. Curiosity killed the cat would be the summary of the film.

The curse of the film series Poltergeist

Death while filming has always had a dark undertone to it but a supposed curse to the cast of the set of the film series Poltergeist is one the most famous. I found this series to be one of the most frightening at a young age and been scarred of clowns since then and get the goosebumps when I'm in my living room waking up to static on the tele. I tend to pass out while watching tv and long film marathons at my place. During the filming cast and crew reported an odd feeling and really weird situation that took place.
Here are some odd facts about the film.

Dominique Dunne, who played the oldest sibling Dana in the first movie, died on November 4, 1982 at age 22 after being strangled by her jealous boyfriend.The boyfriend, John Thomas Sweeney, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison, but was paroled after serving three and a half years.
Julian Beck, 60-year-old actor who played Kane in Poltergeist II: The Other Side, died on September 14, 1985 of stomach cancer diagnosed before he had accepted the role.
Will Sampson, 53 years old, who played Taylor the Medicine Man in Poltergeist II, died as a result of post-operative kidney failure and pre-operative malnutrition problems on June 3, 1987.
Heather O'Rourke, who played Carol Anne in all three Poltergeist movies, died on February 1, 1988 at the age of 12 after what doctors initially described as an acute form of influenza but later changed to septic shock after bacterial toxins invaded her bloodstream. At the time, she had suffered acute bowel obstruction, initially diagnosed as Crohn's disease, which may have been the cause of death.

Film Review: Silver Bullet

A 1985 horror film based on a Stephen King story titled Cycle of the Werewolf. Set in the late 70s in Maine with many unsolved brutal murders taking place in the sleepy town. A paraplegic boy played by Corey Haim is the main character in the film. Also Gary Busey plays a drunk,some what fitting for the time. The wheel chaired bound boy is playing with his new modified wheel chair named " Silver Bullet" on a bridge with fireworks on a dark evening and is confronted by the werewolf. He narrowly escapes after blasting the werewolf's left eye out with a bottle rocket. Suspsion rise from the incident. Gary Busey, a priest, Corey Haim on a wheelchair and one of the better films that captured Stephen Kings stories to the screen. The film won my heart at an early age and is one of the better werewolf films to watch this month for the holiday spirits.

Film Review:Let Me In

A film remake of the Swedish film , Let the Right One In, by Matt Reeves. The same director of Cloverfield. Takes place in the early 80s in New Mexico during winter. A young boy befriends a new new neighbor that happens to be a very well aged vampire whom falls in love with later in the film. Chloe Moretz plays Abby, the vampire. She's the same actress the portrayed Hit girl in Kick Ass. I see a bright future for this young actress with her choice of films and her acting ability. The film was pretty much on point from the original. A very cold dark lonely horror drama. There were a few cute scenes in the film such as the young boy asking her out on a date and giving a her a copy of Romeo and Juliet. I found that heart warming even for such a dark film. The effects in the film were suttle yet to the point. The score was produced by Academy Award winner Micheal Giacchino. The camera work was superb to bring the element of cold isolation in a very film noirish type of setting. This is a great film for that perfect bloody date. I found it romantic at times but this is me though... Overall a horror film finally worth watching.

Nice to see the theme of vengeance in a comic book adapted film but would you expect anything less besides costumes? Directed by Matthew Vaughn and co produced by Brad Pitt. The film is filled with explosive scenes and story line that works. The character build up in the film was on point also the music selection for certain scenes. The film is basically about this patsy that decides to fight crime in an outfit to win attention via social media sites. He finds himself meeting more than he expected. The film is a little bit on the violent side of things and a bit graphic but it's a film with Vengeance?! My favorite character in the film would be Hit Girl. I can see a film staring her.

Film Review: The Last Exorcism

Not just another film filled with head turns and watered down guac but a film made to bring you at the edge of your seat in wonder. Shot in a moch documentary style by Daniel Stamm and produced by Eli Roth. Tells the tail of a preacher that performed Exorcisms and decided after a while to exploit his last one via a documentary to show the false promises that he made in the past due to regret. Reading a letter that requested his services for a young farm girl in Louisiana which leads to his last Exorcism. The camera work in the film was shot in the same style of other mockmentary type films but the story of the film caught me by surprise and left the theatre in goosebumps. I rarely get goosebumps from horror films these days but this film surely did the job. I highly recommend to watch this film after the sunset anything less would be surely lame.

A band that I really enjoy watching and listening to in Austin. A post punk vibe with a unique sound that is peppered with other sounds. Had a moment to share a few words with Alfie from the band. I highly suggest you check them out and catch one of their shows in the area.

How long has the band been together and how did it form?

We form the band out of boredom- it's been almost a decade in the making and there's seem to be nothing to cover the void we all feel inside.

Where are some the most memorable places that Manikin have played at and why?

One memorable show was at Emo's where there was only one guy at the front dancing like he was doing the P90X commercial. it was a little show in it self. I almost forgot we were playing- it was that cool to watch.

What are some of the influences of the band, also any favorite local bands that you enjoy playing with?

Early Siouxsie and Joy Division, The Avengers, Prince and Michael Jackson, the Adolescence, The Vibrators, Madonna, the Normals, maybe Lydia Lunch and Richard Hell. Lots of stuff. We enjoy paying with The Hexie, Bottle Service,

On your most recent album, Stop the Sirens, how long did it take to record and write the songs for the album?

like five minutes- it comes to us in a dream and completely ornamented and ready to be disastered.

Can you elaborate on what the song Sirens is about?

it's about escaping but getting caught. Also Perfect Picture is another song that grabs my attention, can you tell a little bit more about? Our struggle is the same in any generation. The message is the same but with different author. We are not any better.

Film Review: Fantastic Mr. Fox

The first stop motion picture from Wes Anderson based on Roald Dahl's children novel. Tells the tale of a Fox with his lady, Felicity, getting busted while stealing chickens on a farm also found out she is pregnant with a cub. Felicity convinces Mr. Fox if they live that he will find safer employment. Time passes, currently living in a hole and decided to find shelter in a new home at the base of a tree. Right in the front yard of the new home are three farmhouses which rekindles old habits and leads to them being chased down by the three farmers. With his new copilot the possum, he steals from all three farms. Many other characters are portrayed, such as the Badger ( voiced by Bill Murrary), Felicity (Meryl Streep), Mr. Fox ( voiced by George Clooney) and much more. The film is very uplifting and has the Wes Anderson quirks and dry humor.

Jarvis Cocker (Britpop band Pulp) makes a guess cameo as a song writer towards the end of the film while the farmers are in pursuit. Another brilliant soundtrack that's worth listening to over and over. The film over all is great and worth watching over a few times. I would consider this a borderline family type movie that's enjoyable. It was nominated for the 82nd Academy Awards for best Animated Feature and original score. I really felt it should have won both, well at least the Animated Feature Academy Award.

Director Guillermo del Toro's book series

The Strain is the first novel of a vampire trilogy to be co-authored by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan.
The book was released on June 2nd, 2009 and the second installment, entitled The Fall, is to be released in September 2010. I'm going to to have to catch up on some reading real quick. I found this to be very interesting since one of his influences is H.P. Lovecraft.

Film Review: Battle Royale

This is in my top ten favorite films.

A Japanese film based on a Japanese novel. Stars Takeshi Kitano along with Chiaki Kuriyama whom was GoGo in Kill Bill among others. The film takes place in the near future of Japan where much of the children have kinda caused the adults to have a fear of a threat. The story continues with the main character losing his father to suicide after his mother abandons him. Finding his mind clouded by disillusion and little respect for authorities like his peers. The class ends up on going on a bus trip to be gassed, kidnapped and slowly awaken to find metal collars around their necks in a cold tattered classroom with their old teacher. The teacher informs them that they have been selected to participate in a program called "Battle Royale" which means everyone has to kill each other off until there is one person left. The children are devastated and shocked by but proceed to a bloody slaughter of each other. Some get with the program and others that don't are slain by fellow classmates for survival. Fewer and fewer students are left from the traps set from their teacher and fellow classmates on a rampage. There is much to tell about this film and I should write a paper on how great this film is. The character build up in the film is great and you can relate to most of the students. The cinematography was a little above average but set the mood. The score of the film really set the mood. A very bloody and tasteful film of many themes.

Film Review:Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

A Fantasy Film by Terry Gilliam, Monty Python Troupe, tells the tale about a traveling Theater Troupe that made a deal with the Devil long ago and a passage way in a mirror that explores ones imaginations. Staring Heath Leadger, Tom Waits, Christopher Plummer with cameos from Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell. The film was one of the most creative and interesting films with for Art Direction. I found Tom Waits portrayal of the Devil to be one the highlight of the film. Another would be the elephant temple and history about the curse/deal that the Devil placed. Sadly to say that this is Heath Leadger's last acting film role due to his death. The cameos appearances were obviously to replace the remaining parts for Heath but did fit very well. I'm not going to say this is his best performance but the film was great overall and looking forward to adding this to my personal collection. The camera work was amazing and the screenwriting also the character development. I found the film to be overall interesting and enjoyable for all ages. If you found this to be enjoyable also check out The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Time Bandits.

Film Review:Thriller

A 1973 Swedish Exploitation Film that was banned from the whole country for it's content. Also known as They Call Her One Eye. Tells the tale of a young girl who is sexually assaulted as a child that leads to her being mute. She's innocent and very vulnerable. During a walk down a road she decided to hitch a ride with a guy that kidnaps and cons her into becoming a heroin addict sex slave to some of the worst kind of people. She's stabbed in the eye for not doing her duty with a client. She eventually saves money for weapons, training in driving, long range shooting to fulfill her vengeance on the people that brought her down. She goes on a blood lust rampage. It had an influence on Elle Driver character in Kill Bill hence the eye patch. I found the film to be rather intense and would watch it again. The film soundtrack was on point and the camera work was ok. This film is pretty hardcore and extremely violent. It's banned in Sweden.

Film Review: The Prestige

Based on the novel by Christopher Priest about rival magicians in the early 2oth century in London. Directed, produced and co wrote by Christopher Nolan and kinda was part of one of three films to explore stage magic during 2006. The film has an all star cast featuring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Micheal Caine and David Bowie. David Bowie portrays Telsa, very believable as usual from Bowie and adds his own personal magic to the film. A mysterious thriller. Begins with a fatal mistake with Chinese water torture device and sends the magicians into a stage feud. One of the magicians, Angier, stumbles upon a stage show with some sort of teleportation type device. Curiosity leads him to meet Nikola Telsa (David Bowie) in Colorado Springs. Telsa created a teleportation device and hands over an improved one to aide Angier in future performances. There is a twist towards the end that had me amazed. The picture itself was well shot and captured the time frame. Very entertaining film with a Hitchcock shade.

Film Review: Taken

Has to be one of my favorite films of all time. Luc Besson co wrote the script.Vengeance is a heavy theme and is my favorite theme in a film. A thriller to know. Liam Neeson stars in the film as a retired clandestine officer. He lives a humble life, an ex wife that despises him and a daughter he loves more than anything. Sounds like the formula for an American family these days. He is persuaded to sign off a parental consent form to allow his daughter to travel to Europe with a friend, both are very young and naive. He is a little bit paranoid about it all but allows it all to happen to help regain a bond with his daughter. As soon as she lands in France her travel buddy and herself are abducted into a Hungarian sex trade which only gives him a few days to find her with little to nothing of clues before she is gone forever. He travels to France with a mission to find his daughter and get justice for what happened. The action scenes in the film are amazing and Liam Neeson can so easily be the next James Bond after this role. The film was very realistic and frightening to know that situations like this take place every hour. The camera work in the film is amazing also the film score. All the characters were well created, also the dialog. A possible sequel is underway. A film with class and vengeance. I highly recommend this film.

Film Review: The Wolfman

A remake on the classic 1941 film with an all star cast. The plot was twisted a little bit from the original. The film was really fun to watch and was interesting at times. The film begins the main Character Lawarence on a theatre tour in London and informed of his brothers disappearance. He heads back to Blackmoor and visits his estranged father played by Anthony Hopkins. Lawrence finds a band of gypsy's camped out during a full moon. A rabid werewolf strikes and severely wounds him which turns Lawrence. There should have been more character development with Inspector Francis Aberline played by Hugo Weaving. The blue tones in the film really set the mood. There was a substantial amount of blood in the film is a stylish way to earn an R rating. This built the film up for me and Danny Elfman was the original composer. I'm still thinking if it would have been better to see the film in the theater to fully get the surround sound. Overall I found the remake to be not the best remake nor the worst remake.

Soon wakes up the ship Captain and discovers what happened to the last sleeper ship. Exploring the ship they discover bodies and fast moving mutants running around the ship. Finding other survivors on the ship with a mission to save the ship by turning on the nuclear reactor. Things get crazier as the film progresses. The cinematography of the film was great and gave an overwhelming feel. The soundtrack was impressive. It's worth checking out for sure.

Film Review: Fourth Kind

Blair Witch meets Fire in the Sky. Fourth Kind is a scifi/horror mock documentary on alien abductions in Alaska. Starring Milla Jovovich. Has a real eerie feel to it from the beginning, something that's just creepy in the sense that you don't want to look out the window after watching the film during the late night. Starts off with an interview with the wheel chair bound Dr. Abby Tyler at Chapman University. She tells her tale of a mysterious sightings of an owl with patients. After hypnosis she soon discovers the terrifying truth that they are victims of alien abductions. I found the film to be interesting and landscapes of Alaska make for a lovely backdrop on the film. I was scarred at first but not in the end.

Film Review:Predators

This film kinda takes place as a sequel to the original Predator. I'm guessing the name Predators is in relation to Aliens. The film starts off with Adrien Brody falling from the sky to a remote jungle in the middle of a firefight with other people that fell from the sky as well. Soon they notice that they all kinda have something in common. A Yakuza assassin, Mexican Drug Cartel enforcer, Russian Spetsnaz solider, an African Ruff officer, an IDF Black Ops Sniper, a death row inmate on the FBI's top list, an American doctor and an ex Army Special Forces Officer. Sounds like a Tom Clancy novel to me. They all soon discover that they are being hunted on a game preserve planet by Alien hunters, the Predator. The film is nonstop action and suspense. I was at the edge of my seat with tourettes through out the film. The cinematography in the film is amazing also the character development. I see a sequel to this being successful.

Film Review: Exit Through the Gift Shop

One of the most interesting films I've seen in a while that kept me at the edge of my seat in laughter and amusement. The film is not entirely based on the illusive Banksy just to say. He does have a few clandestine like comments throughout the film which is really amazing. Shepard Fairey is seen much in the film, scenes of him at the print shop and posting up his art at night in some of the most daring spots. Other artists are captured on the camera while on their night ventures. There's even an amusing scene at Disneyland. I couldn't help laugh out loud during much of the film with it's quirkiness and wit. I honestly don't want to say too much on the film cause I just feel that you just need to watch it to understand. Another surprise would be the film music is by Geoff Barrow, the man behind Portishead. Banksy is from Bristol and so is Portishead, makes sense. I highly recommend to watch this film or add it to your DVD collection. This made in my top list of favorite films that I would watch over and over.

Film review:A-Team

There's been a trend of Hollywood remakes of old films and TV series in the past lately. Some good while some bad. The modernization of the A-Team was a smart witty action packed film that had me whistling the theme song when leaving the theater. Produced by Ridley Scott, it has the same plot of the old series with being sentenced for a crime they didn't commit and faced with impossible situations that they cleverly overtaken. The story starts off of as kinda of a prequel to the whole series, starting with them being set up then escaping from prison with a bit of vengeance and a bit wanting to complete a mission. The film takes place today with an Alpha team after the Gulf war, a bit of a Black water soldiers of fortune undertone at times. The location sets that changed kept the film at interest. The characters which makes the A-Team, many people were a bit hesitant about, were on point. Hannibal is played by Liam Neeson, Face is played by Bradley Cooper, Murdock was played by Sharlto Copley and B.A. Barckus is played by UFC Champion Quinton Jackson. I think most people were a little worried and may be opposed to the role formally played by Mr.T but the cast was very believable from the get go. There's always someone out that has to complain about something. Overall I found the film explosively amusing and well done for a remake.

J Dilla Documentary

J Dilla is simply an amazing person and artist. I first found out about Dilla long ago when he was with Slum Village. I kinda drifted off on to other tunes but always came back impressed what Dilla produced. His beats were just on a scale from one to ten, a 20. He passed away long ago from a rare blood disease and possibly Lupus. Finishing Donuts from his hospital bed and touring Europe from a wheel Chair. Also was 75% finished with his last album The Shining. His work ethic was just on point as his beat production. I just have soo much respect for him and inspired every time I think of him or see pictures of him working on tracks. The 3 part interview below captures Dilla better than I can put to words and what he did.

New film coming out from one of my favorite directors, Takashi Miike. He's just amazing and very much on the shock value and helped capture the Yakuza on the cinema. He is one of the masters of horror cinema with a large cult following. Looking forward to meeting him someday soon. I'm very excited to see what will come of this film. Film Review: $9.99

I recently checked out the independent animated feature $9.99 as it is now Watch it Instantly on Netflix! I first blogged about the film last year after seeing the trailer, and for some reason forgot about it until now.
It is rare to find an independent feature animation done so well. Last year must have been the season of Stop Motion. We had Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and this little gem.
The film was inspired by the short stories of Etgar Keret and directed by Tatia Rosenthal. The audience is offered an inside look into the lives of several individuals who share an apartment complex. It is most certainly a comedy, as I found several scenes quite hilarious. I wasn't sure what to think of the film at first, but was quickly sucked into the story. The film isn't exactly about one thing in particular, but rather a series of interesting character studies. We've got a newly formed angel with a cynical outlook on the world, a out of work young man who seeks knowledge on the meaning of life through a self help book (on sale for $9.99), a hilarious developing relationship between a model and a repo man, and more. I'd hate to give away too much, since it is definitely worth a reviewing.
I was also very thankful for the quick runtime of the film. It was refreshing to sit through a nice hour and some odd minutes rather than the 2hr plus films that are typical these days. Sometimes you just want a quick little story.
I rate this film 4 out of 5! Check it out

Today is the anniversary of the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. He was found by an electrician at his household but was deceased for a few days from a self inflected gun shot wound. He's an influence on many including myself since an early age. Still remember when it was announced on the news at my neighbors on my way to school. Rather shocking and but here is one of his last interviews to remember him by. Kurt you will be missed and I wish you were here still.

I never got to meet Kurt Cobain, but I did have the opportunity to interview him, through a series of trans-Atlantic phone calls and faxes. In the months before his death, Kurt had been designing a guitar with the Fender company (what came to be known as the ‘Jag-Stang’ guitar – a custom built Fender Jaguar, Fender Mustang hybrid). Kurt enjoyed his dealings with the company and had consequently agreed that he would, at some point, grant an interview for Fender’s Frontline magazine. When I first contacted him to do that piece – in February 1994 – Nirvana was in Europe on what would be their final tour. Kurt was, somewhat understandably, less than eager to submit to interviews at the time, but it was made clear to him that the idea of the piece was not to prod him about any of the sensational rumors that were circulating about the band but to just let him speak frankly about his music. He graciously consented.

After having heard much about Cobain’s reputation as a smack-addled cipher, egocentric brat and/or prickly press hater, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that he was a warm, forthcoming, insightful and very funny interviewee. When our communications came to an end, I considered it a privilege to have made his acquaintance and wanted to make sure that the Cobain I had spoken with came through clearly in my piece. Unfortunately, before that piece had ever been written, Kurt had over-dosed on champagne and Rohypnol while the band was in Rome. This was, at first, described as an accident but eventually it was revealed that it had been a calculated suicide attempt.

A month later, Cobain, having escaped from a rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles, made his way back to Seattle. On April 5, 1994, he barricaded himself in a room above his garage, put a shotgun to his head, and ended his life. After Cobain’s death, the Frontline piece was re-edited, and what ran were excerpts from the following interview, along with a short memorial. Here is the full transcript of what was almost certainly one of Cobain’s final interviews.

Interviewer: Nirvana has become a “Big Rock Story,” but the music still seems to be the most important part of that story. Your music offers the simple, powerful rock n’ roll thrill that so many other bands seem to have a hard time delivering. How proud are you of Nirvana’s work?

Kurt: It’s interesting, because while there’s a certain gratification in having any number of people buy your records and come to see you play, none of that holds a candle to simply hearing a song that I’ve written played by a band. I’m not talking about radio or MTV. I just really like playing these songs with a good drummer and bass player. Next to my wife and daughter, there’s nothing that brings me more pleasure.

I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished together. Having said that, however, I don’t know how long we can continue as Nirvana without a radical shift in direction. I have lots of ideas and musical ambitions that have nothing to do with this mass conception of “grunge” that has been force-fed to the record-buying public for the past few years. Whether I will be able to do everything I want to do as part of Nirvana remains to be seen. To be fair, I also know that both Krist and Dave have musical ideas that may not work within the context of Nirvana. We’re all tired of being labeled. You can’t imagine how stifling it is.

Interviewer: You’ve made it clear that you’re not particularly comfortable being a “Rock Star,” but one of the things that tracks like ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ and ‘Pennyroyal Tea’ on In Utero make clear is that you’re certainly a gifted song writer. You may have a tough time sometimes, but has the written process continued to be pleasurable and satisfying for you?

Kurt: I think that it becomes less pleasurable when I think of it in terms of being my “job.” Writing is the one part that is not a job, it’s expression. Photo shoots, interviews… that’s the real job part.

Interviewer: You’re a very passionate performer. Do you find yourself re-experiencing the tenderness and rage in your songs when you perform them?

Kurt: That’s tough because the real core of any tenderness or rage is tapped the very second that a song is written. In a sense, I’m only re-creating the purity of that particular emotion every time I play that particular song. While it gets easier to summon those emotions with experience, it’s sort of dishonesty in that you can never recapture the emotion of a song completely each time you play it. Real “performing” implies a sort of acting that I’ve always tried to avoid.

Interviewer: It must be a very odd feeling for Nirvana to be performing in sports arenas these days. How do you get along with the crowds your attracting now?

Kurt: Much better than I used to. When we first got successful, I was extremely judgmental of the people in the audience. I held them up to a sort of punk-rock ethos. It upset me that we were attracting and entertaining the very people that a lot of my music was a reaction against. I’ve since become much better for accepting people for who they are. Regardless of who they are before they came to the show, I get a few hours to try and subvert the way they view the world. It’s not that I’m trying to dictate, it’s just that I am afforded a certain platform on which I can express my views. At the very least, I always get the last word.

Interviewer: There’s also a great deal of craft in your songs, but you also seem to enjoy the thrill of simply cranking up an electric guitar. Is playing guitar a pleasure for you, or do you battle with the instrument?

Kurt: The battle is the pleasure. I’m the anti-guitar hero – I can barely play the thing myself. I’m the first to admit that I’m no virtuoso. I can’t play like Segovia. The flip side of that is that Segovia could probably never have played like me.

Interviewer: With Pat Smear playing guitar in the touring line-up, has your approach to the instrument changed much? Is it easier to enjoy playing live with an extra pair of guitar-hands helping you out?

Kurt: Pat has worked out great from day one. In addition to being one of the my closest friends, Pat has found a niche in our music that compliments what was already there, without forcing any major changes. While I don’t see myself ever becoming Mick Jagger, having Pat on stage has freed me to spend more time concentrating on my connection with the audience. I’ve become more of a showman – well maybe that’s going a little too far. Let’s just say that having Pat to hold down the rhythm allows me to concentrate on the performance as a whole. I think it’s improved our live show 100%.

Interviewer: On In Utero, and in concert, you play some of the most powerful “anti-solos” ever hacked out of a guitar. What comes to mind for you when it’s time for the guitar to cut loose?

Kurt: Less than you could ever imagine.

Interviewer: Krist and Dave do a great job of helping to bring your songs to life. How do you describe the role of each player, including yourself, in the Nirvana sound?

Kurt: While I can do a lot by switching the channels on my amp, it’s Dave who really brings the physicality to the dynamics in our songs. Krist is great at keeping everything going along at some kind of even keel. I’m just the folk singer in the middle.

Interviewer: Aside from interviews, what are the biggest drags for you these days?

Kurt: Being apart from my family for months at a time. Having people feed me fine French meals when all I want is macaroni and cheese. Being seen as unapproachable when I used to be called shy. Did I mention interviews?

Interviewer: Nevermind changed your life in a big way, but having Courtney and Frances around must help you to keep things in perspective. How much do you enjoy being a family man?

Kurt: It’s more important than anything else in the whole world. Playing music is what I do – my family is what I am. When everyone’s forgotten about Nirvana and I’m on some revival tour opening for the Temptations and the Four Tops, Frances Bean will still be my daughter and Courtney will still be my wife. That means more than anything else to me.

Film Review: A Serious Man

This film could be considered a sleeper but in a good way. The film tells a tale of a Jewish suburban family in Minneapolis in the 1960s. I found how the film was shot was stunning and how they just did their research on the set design. I found the film slightly amusing but more feeling sorry for the main character but in the end becoming more annoyed with his actions of not taking action. A Jewish Micheal Douglas in the 60s that didn't crack as hard to say the least. I found it rather quirky with a twist of dark humor.

Film Review: Wilco: Ashes of an American Flag

I first heard about the Chicago based band Wilco from watching them side stage at Austin City Limits a while ago. I didn't know who they were at the moment but thought their live set was amazing and energetic. Asking a person before they set on stage which happened to be one of the members. I caught wind of this film when it was screened at the Alamo Draft House. What drew me to the film also was who directed it and mixed the film. One of the directors is Brendan Cantry of Fugazi and Eli Janney from Girls against Boys who mixed and engineered the film. A couple of people that I see as a big influence for me. It's an enjoyable film if you're a fan of the band and watching the film just might make you a fan. Ya never know!

Film Review: Under The Great White Northern Lights

This picture is simply a Kodak moment at it's finest.
Director Emmett Malloy filmed a documentary in the Summer of 2007 of the White Stripes on tour. I'm usually thinking another tour film of bloopers but this was shot in the most artistic memorable manner that can be done of the band. Jack White mixed over 40 songs for the film soundtrack. It's been doing very well at all the festivals and was featured recently during SXSW at the Paramount Theater in Austin Tx with a couple of very special guests that would know this better than me. ;) The film should finally be out on on dvd and Blue Ray but also features very signature items when you purchase it. I highly recommend to see this film, it's simply amazing just like the White Stripes and simply inspiring for the music minded folks.

Film Review: Clash of the Titans

I caught an early screening of Clash of The Titans last night, a film which I have been very interested in seeing since I first heard word of it. I am a HUGE fan of the original Clash, notably for the incredible animation from Ray Harryhausen, a personal hero of mine. I was skeptical of the remake and also a bit worried that younger audiences may overlook the classic and adopt this new CG heavy version as their preferred film.
I must say I was quite happy with the film. It ran at a brisk pace and was filled with some very memorable moments. I was especially happy to see this film, since I am such a big fan of classical mythology. Stories of gods and all the crazy shit they did is very interesting subject matter. There are so many stories I read back in school that would make for excellent films. I'm hoping we will see some of these in the years to come.
So the things I liked about the film were:
* the fantastic set design
Numerous scenes had a grand sense of scale and wonder to them. Giant statues of Zeus, a cliffside town, foggy and dark underworld, and Medusa's lair all looked amazing. Mount Olympus was a highlight as well. I really loved how the God's were able to look down on a miniature world complete with clouds, mountains, etc..
* the creatures
It is clear a lot of attention went into designing all the various monsters in the film. The Kraken looked excellent, and dangerous, and Medusa was extremely cool too. I liked how she was still beautiful, save for the snakey hair. Personal preference makes me like the original Medusa though... I just felt she was far more terrifying as a stop motion creature. Stop motion in general is a bit more creepy, since the characters would move in a slightly unnatural and jerky way.
* the story
Although the story deviated from the original film a bit, and left out a couple things I would have loved to see, I thought they did a good job with it. The relationship between Perseus and Zeus was done well, and I warmed up to the scheming side story of Hades as well.
* the casting
Liam Neeson as Zeus... YES! A win all around for the casting.

Things I didn't particularly like
* the 3dness
I felt this film didn't have to be in 3d at all. Wearing 3d glasses does a few things to the film. First of all, the glasses themselves were slightly tinted making it difficult to see some of the more darkly lit scenes. Second, trying to take in the 3d of the film and pay attention to the battles was a bit hard. My eyes were straining far too much and my head began to throb towards the end of the film.
* character development
The film had a very short run time... almost too short. I felt like we could have gotten to know some of the side characters a bit more intimately so that we cared about their fate a bit more. I got the feeling a lot of side scenes were left on the cutting room floor. Perhaps we will see them on a dvd.
* the fight choreography
The fights were filmed really close and mainly in super shaky cam mode. This made it difficult to focus on the action. Also, there were a few sloppy moments that bothered me, such as when Perseus somehow ends up inside of a giant scorpion. We didn't see this happen on screen and it just seemed weird to me. I wish they would've given us a few more long shots so we could see what the hell was going on. Not all were bad though. The Medusa scene was very nice!

Overall I really enjoyed the film. I bet it is going to get some hate from people who hold a torch for the original (I do kinda), but I say enjoy it for what it is. I've never been a fan of watching films to pick apart the blunders anyways. To be clear, the original is still the superior film (obviously), but I do enjoy a cheesy film from time to time.
You know what I'd like to see? A sequel. Yeah I said it. That way we could see what the filmmakers do with a new storyline all on their lonesome. Also, does this mean we will see a Jason and the Argonauts remake? Time will tell and I remain skeptical. Come on God of War movie! Bring us something REALLY epic!
I rate it around 3 out of 5

Film Review: Antichrist

I just finished watching Antchrist (which is available as of this post to watch instantly on Netflix).

I really enjoyed it! The cinematography was absolutely stunning. Just about every scene looked like a moving painting, worthy to have hung in any art gallery in the world. Even some of the more grotesque and shocking scenes would work well in one of those 'shock' galleries the cool kids hang out at.
The pacing of the film was spot on. I loved how they separated the film into little chapters. Each one seemed to have a different aesthetic which worked out well.
The acting was also a highlight. Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg both delivered strikingly realistic portrayals of a couple in the midst of a terrible tragedy. Apparently Gainsbourg's agents refused to allow her to take the role due to its shocking subject matter, but she insisted.
The entire film has a sense of mystique to it, and it seems every shot holds a deeper symbolic meaning. I personally am not too sure how I feel about the story, perhaps due to a lack of knowledge on the religious undertones. I enjoyed it for what it is and can definitely recommend a viewing, although it is not for the squeamish or those offended by sexually explicit material.

Moon:Film Review

A very well crafted film showing a man experiencing a personal crisis on a Moon base to harvest resources for Earth. The film was shot very clean and gave the feeling of solitude through out the film even with the help of his only contact a personal robot, voiced by Kevin Spacey, to care for him as he breaks down slowly as the film progresses. The acting in the film is superb and just stunning with a twist towards the end that will make you question. One of the best Sci-Fi films of last year.
A note from Eric
I was eagerly anticipating watching this film when it was released. The talk surrounding it made it sound like a return to the brainier science fiction films of the ole' black and white years. Some were comparing it to 2001. After watching the film I must say I agree with both points. I loved the sense of isolation you experience along withe the main character. I was also extremely impressed with the way Sam Rockwell's character interacts with himself (not much of a spoiler to be honest). Coming from someone who has done some basic split screen type effects, including some interaction, that ping pong scene was stunning.
The music was one of the highlights of the film as well. The score moves the story forward at an almost constant pace. It was hypnotizing to be sure.
Now I had a few issues with the film to be perfectly honest. When I sat down to watch it I had totally different expectations as to the plot. The ending threw me off completely. I have a feeling if I rewatch it I would actually enjoy it even more than the ... confusing... first go through.
I'm looking foward to seeing what Duncan Jones does next, since this was his first film.
I agree with Richard. Best Sci Fi film of 09'. Of course the only competition was Pandorum, a more action/horror driven story that wasn't too shabby in my opinion but it aint winnin' any awards.
I give it 4 out of 5 split personalities/clones/mental breakdowns/who knows

Modest Mouse

I ran into Modest Mouse long ago when I was living in New York back in the early 2000s or very late 90s and spent a weekend with them at the Bowery Ballroom not knowing who they where until after the show. Just on a friends reference to check them out. Just thought these guys were amazing and lived the moment to the fullest with randomness. Also it's pretty awesome to watch someone play a guitar with his mouth yelling out lyrics. Sounded like a plan over a mountain of Paps Blue Ribbon cans. They've greatly changed since the late 90s to what they are today and I doubt they remember me. Johnny Marr from the Smiths is currently in their lineup which I find strange. I still listen to their first three albums occasionally. Here's a very old documentary with the group and featuring many artists such as Built to Spill and Elliot Smith featured below in order. Enjoy and please ROCK ON!

Akira Kurosawa: 100 years!

My all time favorite director was born 100 years ago yesterday, March 23rd, 1910.

It's odd. Two days ago I got the sudden urge to check out his films again. It had been quite a while since I took one of them in. I decided to go with Yojimbo so I put that in for a whirl. The next morning I stayed in bed to start the day with Sanjuro. That evening was The Hidden Fortress, and just tonight I was watching Throne of Blood.

I heard it was 100 years since his birth, but I didn't even realize yesterday was the day until I saw a friends tweet. There must've been something in the air to compel me to watch his films these past few days. It feels almost supernatural.

Kurosawa is one of the reasons I wanted to pursue filmmaking. The man was a true genius in every sense of the word. All I can say is Thank You to Akira Kurosawa for changing the lives of so many people for the better with your visions. You are seriously missed.

Jarvis Cocker

Pulp is an amazing yet quirky group that attended St Marks College in London that was part of the Brit Pop movement in the mid 90s. Led by the daring yet exceptionally talented Jarvis Cocker. This a brilliant video they did long ago in the 90s. I'm just finding the way it was shot so clean with that film noir feel that I miss in films these days. Jarvis went to film school while forming Pulp. I can see his influence in taking part of the video. He was one of my influences when I was little and still is an influence on the way I see things.

Hello everyone,

First off would like to write thank you to everyone that has been supporting this blog Eric and I created. We coined the idea of having a blog at a local bar thinking what we would like to read in a blog and both agreed on something based on film and music. Basically just things we are fans of, which reflects in the interviews and reviews. We should be posting more but Eric has been slightly busy working on some new animations and I've been busy working on some short stories I hope to see as short films someday, also being more involved with the film community. We both have watched a million new and old films, soon to review when time permits. Basically just wanted to update you with what we both are up to these days. For a while I heard about UME and finally had the chance to see them destroy the stage at Red 7 while opening for River Boat Gamblers. I was very impressed by the sonic CBGB nyc rock out vibe they produced. Been listening to their new EP that they recently produced non stop in the play lists.

How long has the band been together and how did you form?

We really got things rolling seriously as UME around 2007 when we all moved to Austin, but the three of us have been playing together off and on since 2002. I first met Eric and Jeff playing DIY punk shows in the Houston area while we were in different bands in high-school. I was playing guitar in a grindcore-ish thrashy band at age 15. At one of my band's first shows at a skate park, Eric came up and talked to me while I was sitting on a vert ramp. We've been together ever since.

Where does the name UME come from?

It's a Japanese plum blossom pronounced "ooo-may." Our friend Tim came up with our band name in honor of his favorite food, umeboshi. He actually hooked-up with his wife at an UME show :)

Which bands influenced UME and what groups are you currently listening to?

Fugazi to Ric Ocasek, Archers of Loaf to Team Dresch, Deep Purple to Prince, Spazz to Bat for Lashes. I've been listening to a lot of Fleetwood Mac, Fever Ray, and Screaming Females lately.

How was the recent tour with the Meat Puppets and any future tours planned?

It was an honor for us to tour the west-coast with such talented, down-to-earth, and really hilarious guys. Cris became on of my BFFs on the road and entertained us for hours with his gift for instantly deciphering spoken word scrambles - though I got him with "ronhatcceniropt." Yes, we're going to be touring constantly right after we finish recording the full-length this summer.

Where’s your favorite experience showcasing UME?

We really love playing live and getting to meet people that enjoy our music. I'm also still motivated by taking the stage and catching people off guard by the fact that I'm, yes, actually "in the band," not just "with" the band or the merch-girl. It's surprising to me that this is still many people's expectations and it's my dream to help change that.

What cities out of Texas have shown the most appeal to the band?

We've met and been supported by awesome people in Austin, Dallas, and Houston early on... we've even had some good shows in Beaumont and the Valley.

I really enjoy your new EP Sunshower. How does it differ from your last album?

Sunshower was our first time to actually enter a studio to make an album. Our first release is pretty rough and began as a set of demos that was picked up by a Brooklyn label. At that time, the band lived 1600 miles apart and rarely practiced. By the time we recorded Sunshower we were able to practice consistently and I think we began to find our identity as a band. I also tried to find my voice as a singer (I've never considered myself a singer) and incorporate more melodic elements with the heavier side of our sound.

Any songs that you really enjoy playing live during shows, songs that you just have to play?

We still play one of the first songs we ever wrote called, "Baby Xie-Xie." Its ending crescendos into chaos in a way that makes it a fun live experience but probably tortuous on headphones :)

Do you have any future projects coming up?

We're working like crazy to finish writing the full-length and to get into the studio this spring. We're also in talks with a few labels and hope to have some good news around SXSW.

Besides music, what are some hobbies that you all enjoy?

Jeff's a heavy reader and Eric has been getting in to making effects pedals and just built a tube amplifier for his stereo. I've been mostly trying to write vocal parts for the new songs, but also cooking a lot of southern-style food - collards, cornbread, and pinto beans (cooking is pretty uncharacteristic for me, but this cold weather has been keeping me inside:)

What inspired you to create Winters Going?

I thought the album was dark and needed something
lighter.

Why did you decided to collaborate with Buck 65?

He's been a homie of mine for many years and a huge
influence on my music, I thought he would do a good
job on the record and would understand what I was
doing.

Can you explain the art work behind the album?

The kid who did does most of Lex stuff and is named
Bat and he did his art for boombit.I was really siked
to work with him and told him that I wanted something
very minimal. He came back with the idea of his of
making the album a coffin and the hands inside are
pushing out. I really like it a lot! Very consistent
with the record.

Any artists that your interested in working with in
the future?

I did a track with Grande Master Cass from
the kool quest brothers.

Any future plans?

I'm actually getting really amped to do an
instrumental record.

Same kind of sound as Winters going?

You never know till you hear it.

Tell me about Lex Records?

Lex is a series from Warp Records and was started by a
guy named Tom Brown, basically a hip-hop division of
Warp. Going into the hip-hop genre. They have made a
name for themselves and Danger Mouse, Gemini, the
Gifted one, Sage, and Boombit is on the label
and the label seems to be doing quit well.

How do you feel about artists such as Prefuse 73?

I do!, I really don't look into artists thinking is
this hip-hop or not. Not the way I look at things. I
really do like him as an artist and think he is
interesting.

How long have you been in this business?

I've been a DJ since 95. I had a radio show. I've been
making beats for about four years.

Do you listen to anything else besides hip-hop?

I listen to tons of stuff that is not hip-hop based.
Lately I've been listening to rock based stuff.My
obsession is crowd rock and post punk. Which has a
lot of parallels to hip-hop. It's really based on
drums around that music. I'm obsessed with that music
as I am with hip-hop. I'm into in a really big way.

Are you looking into possibly doing film scores?

I would love too!

What kind of genre would you be interested in?

I would be interested in doing any genre but I would
have to like.

What do you have planned for the future?

First off the bass player, Matt Kelly.I'm pretty much
sure I'm going to collaborate with him at some point
again.The two guys in our band are real inspiring. I
think me and Rob are talking about doing an EP
together.Where we would take a lot of dope West coast
mcs like Sinco and we have this Etour EP that me and
Rob did. I did the beats and Rob raps on it. Have a 7
inch with Grande Master Cas coming out in a couple of
weeks coming out on Grande Good Records. I did a mix
with Stienski, the Sugarco, it's only out on import on
sugarhill suites.

whats your favorite color?

I don't have a favorite color, probably grey if
anything.

Ha, I noticed that you and Signify both collaborate with
Buck 65?

Well Buck is a long time partner of my mind. Started
making music with him since 95. AS the sebutones we
released a couple records together, like rap records
that we're both mcing on and sharing production
duties. And over the years of course we sort of gone
into our own directions. I still on occasion work with
him. But for the most part I'm just more interested in
developing my own career as a rapper. But as hip-hop
music goes there's a lot of similarities in taste of
myself and Justin. I think we both come from the same
era with lyrics. When lyrics were very important. For
now that focus doesn't seem to be there too much
anymore.

What do you think about Madlib?

I think Madlib is really dope. I like a lot of the
Quananm kats. Doom is still around kinda left over
from the old days. But both of us come from that era
and more so appreciated cats with lyrics.

What inspired you the most to create your unique sound?

Mostly from beat diggin.You know growing up the era of
hip-hop that I did. The only rule was not to fight and
as a result of that I think my taste for music has
gone a little less centered looking for beats that
may or may not have been touched before. Generally
being exposed to genres of music for the most part
that haven't been sampled but could be sampled.
Specifically minimal musics that have an interesting
flare to them. That is what I'm trying to do with my
own music now. Influence from everything from French
pop to punk rock. Straight up rock to breaks to Jazz
to funk and soul and take what I considered the strong
elements of all those different musics put them into
my own thing without exploiting them but more so
paying homage to all those genres

On your latest album did the Montreal winters have an
influence?

Part of it but more so than anything. Just trying to
make a record that really..especially an instrumental
record you would want there to be the same emotion and
tenacity that you would put into a lyric record. My
music has always been real personal and all most
enough so that has pushed me out of writing. I really
don't wanna release my diaries to the public as a
result to that I think I've been trying to put that
same emotions and tenacity to instrumental music.

Still writing?

I'm still writing a lot , I still do raps but
generally I think my life has gotten phased in the
last of the while and there's personal shit. Some
people feel that I and some of the anticon guys have
created a new genre that is specifically that. It's
like diary rap. Like wearing armor in our sleep. All
these thing I generally don't even like, you know.
I prefer not play peoples emotions as my writing style
personally.

I felt the same when I heard one of Buck 65's
songs.The song was on check with the moment of what
was going on in my life.

Tell me about the art that is involved?

I mostly do stuff myself. These days I'm too busy
focusing on music as also a visual artist my taste in
art ascetics are a little refined. The guy who did
all my ninja stuff. Like my chewing on glass record
and my new ep that is coming out in October. My friend
Font a well known graffiti artist in Canada and mostly
doing commercial illustration work these days. I told
him to listen to my record for a couple of weeks and
do what you do. I think that's how friends should do
it.

How did you get started with Ninja tunes?

Jeff was really into the direction my music was
heading. Was doing a live album and sampling myself
and using rique records that caught their attention of
the guys in the uk.

What kind of instruments do you use?

Fender Rhodes, bass, an mpc and other analog outboard
stuff. I use Api compressors.

What kind of music have you been listening to mostly
up in the now?

Everything from Avant Garde music to 70's music

How would you feel about doing film scores any plans
with this?

I would love too but it's the matter that I work with
samples so when I do an album I would have to make an
obscure version.

Have you done anything currently leaning towards this?

I've done stuff for video games like Getaway 2 but it
was music they gave and it really didn't matter what
music I sampled.

Do you find yourself ever mcing once again?

Not in a serious way. The people that like my beats
would not like the kinda rap I do. Ignorant battle
raps. That's the way it was 7 years ago.

How long have you been involved in music?

I've been making beats since 93 and I got my sampler
in 94.

What kind of sampler do you use?

An ARS 10

How did you hook up with Aesop Rock?

I met him in collage in 94 and we used to rap together
and we both started making beats at the same time. We
became friends and from that we built that I took the
more beat direction and he took the more rhyming
direction. We're homeboys you know.

What inspired you to create tracks such as
Carnivore??

It's all about melody and getting something that will
catch someones ear, ya know. I kinda just sit there
until it's done and when I step away from it, it's
done. More about sequencing and building memento.

Do you think that you will possibly might be working with
RJD2 at some point?

To a point. I just don't think that there is a point
for two producers to work together. Cause we both have
our own styles, own ideas on how to make beats,
different equipment. Both kinda go in different
directions. I just see no purpose to it.

What have you been listening to recently?

Mf Doom, Master Killa, I like TI. I got lime wire so
I've been downloading a lot of stuff, basically
whatever I get my hands on.

How do you feel about people downloading your tracks
off the net?

You can't really do anything about it, it's
promotions.When your an artist at my level you really
don't depend on record sales.

Did you used to work in a bakery?

Yea! I did it for 5 years!

I used to dig graves and make pizzas!

Film Review:Paranormal Activity

Didn't make time to catch this at the cinema but I also have a mini theater called my living room. The film was a little bit hyped up but overall I thought the film did justice for the budget it had. Tells a story of a young couple haunted by a demon that brings them the most terrifying night terrors. I felt bad for the couple dealing with the unforeseen nuisance. I guess the girl forgot to tell her boyfriend before she moved in that she has a stalker demon.. Everyone has baggage!
There is one scene that made me jump a little. I don't scare easy so it must have been frightening. The film was shot in a camcorder type style with no soundtrack really, except bass heavy eerie noises from everywhere. It was influenced by the Blair Witch Project in my opinion. I would recommend to check it out or rent it at your local video store.

In tribute to Sophie, Illamasqua has commissioned ‘Dark Angel’ – a short film by award-winning director Fursy Teyssier, that’s a haunting rendition of Sophie’s story, featuring the music of iconic British band, Portishead.

The film launches on MTV on 26th November – Sophie’s birthday.

As a result, the Sophie Lancaster Foundation hopes to generate £500,000 to fund national youth workshops on tolerance. But they can only deliver this essential education programme with your help.

Pretty cool video for a pretty cool song. It's directed by Joey Garfield in one continuous single shot. The gentleman on the crutches is Bill Shannon who was born with a degenerative hip condition. His legs cannot carry his own weight and so he has lived a life on crutches. He has developed a new way of moving through life on his skateboard and the crutches.

Film Review: Avatar

Out of all the films that have come out this year, Avatar ranks as my number one! I was completely mesmerized by the experience, and yes it is an experience rather than another winter blockbuster. The film hit me on a deeper level than I expected, and the feeling seemed to be mutual among my fellow movie goers.

It is best to go into this film with little knowledge of what to expect, so I will keep this brief.

Very rarely does a film compel me to be a better person in my everyday life. It isn't often I am left with my mind completely blown, not only due to the gorgeous art direction and animation, but to the feeling and emotion conveyed on screen.

If I had seen this as a kid I would have left the theater in a state of euphoric child like bliss. I can imagine myself climbing every tree in sight, and opening my eyes a little bit wider than usual.

Bottom line: This film makes you want to hug the world and plant a tree. Go see it now!

Film Review:White Dog

I took interest in this film a while ago for the reason it was portraying a White German Shepherd. I'm a proud owner of a White German Shepherd and he's pretty huge. I really didn't know what the film was about. It's actually a very disturbing film about a racist dog that kills on site. It has a strong theme about if racism is a curable mental illness or a learned behavior. The owners try to reverse what was brought onto the shepherd with great struggle. The film was so controversial at it's time Paramount refused to release it cause of it's strong content. This film is now part of the Criterion Collection as well. I found the movie well produced and well written. Based from a novel of the same title. I highly recommend this film.

Story of my life

I remember falling in love with this commercial when I was little. It was directed by Micheal Bay. The guy that does the epic we are all going to die and save the world films. I can so relate to this commercial on so many levels. Well anyways this commercial came to mind randomly in my head as most things. Commercials really aren't what they used to be. Maybe I'm wrong?

Introducing:Yppah

Had a chat with Yppah about his new album that just came out. He's currently signed onto to Ninja Tune and from Texas. His music productions has been featured in games and even films.

How are you doing today?

Hello Richard. I am very well thank you. :D

How did you get your start in wanting to produce songs and into DJing?

I started playing guitar when I was like 10 and would learn songs that I liked and formed shitty little rock bands. I kind of just did that until i was a couple of years into high school. Around that time me and some friends of mine got into DJing and that led to scratching and working on 'scratch music'. After a while we started recording what we were doing with samples and turntables. That led to wanting to produce and the realization that i could start incorporating guitar and other instruments that I played.

On your last album They know what Ghosts Know how long did it take you to create it?

It took about a year. I had about a year and a half's worth of material from right after i finished my first album, but i ended up scrapping everything. I wasn't satisfied with anything i was making and felt it was all mediocre. I was having trouble finding a direction. I'm not exactly sure when or what song i was working on when i turned the corner but had taken a short break and was listening to a lot of early 90s indie rock. Mainly shoe gaze sort of stuff. It was then that i started finally coming up with songs that i was happy with. Then a year later i had the songs for my final album.

What instruments do prefer to use for the past album?

I was pretty much going for a straight rock band sound with the electronic feel along with most of the same elements from my first album. Things like guitar, bass, drums... standard rock band instruments.

Did you have a concept for it when structuring it?

Not originally. I definitely had a idea after all the break and the whole scrapping of the first batch of material situation.

The track Shutter Speed is rather interesting in the build up, how did you create the song and what inspired you for that song?

I actually made that track when i was living in Austin for a short time. I think i was listening to a ton of stereo lab, so I'm sure that had a big influence. A friend of mine had this junky little drum set that i recorded with a pzm mic and kind of just built everything else around it.

What are some of your influences?

I like comic art a lot. I don't know exactly how much it directly affects my music. I like looking at Basil Wolverton drawings... they make me laugh. I guess i try to incorporate melodies that invoke emotion along the lines of melancholy and a sort of happy whimsical giddyness. Maybe that's where the comic side fits in. Aside from that its just a lot of psych rock, shoegaze and beat oriented music. A lot of various electronic bands. I like Air and Radiohead's compositions a ton. Clark is some really awesome stuff that I've been just recently get into.

Any plans on using live vocals for future projects or road shows?

Yeah there are always plans for vocals. I tried to incorporate some on this last one, but it didn't really pan out. I think this next album should definitely be quite a bit more vocal heavy.

Do you have any more plans for having music on video games?

That's kind of up to my licensing. Hopefully we get some leads soon. I really like money. Spending it, Using it to buy things and live. So yeah, I hope it happens soon ha ha.

How was traveling to Japan and what were some highlights being out there?

I loved Japan. The crowds out there are great. The first trip out we played a sold out crowd in Tokyo a couple thousand deep i think. That was pretty crazy playing to that many people. I liked walking around the Shibuya area. Its fascinating with all the crazy little stores and lights. Kind of expensive but fun.

Any plans on performing soon?

The only thing of the books for Yppah so far is SXSW. We are working on securing a spot for the NRMAL Festival in Monterrey Mexico the week before SXSW. It looks like that might pan out.

What are some current projects you have and future plans?

Right now I'm working on a project called Collider with a friend of mine who produces under the name Pollination. He has a release out on Exponential Records called Inca Orange and was also a part of the Day Of The Woman project. As of right now all we have out is a remix we did for the major lazer contest. We should hopefully have something completed by the summer.

Any films that find influencing you with creating your tunes?

Nah not really. I watch a bunch of junk. I like typical shitty movies so i don't think that's really influencing anything I'm making..Ha.

What is your favorite film monster?

ha ha... the Leprechaun from the Leprechaun Movies. Hes a little bastard!
